PulpMotion Advance – Mac Review

PulpMotion Advance – Mac Review

Developer: Aquafadas
App: PulpMotion Adv.
Price: $85 to upgrade, $129 full
Version Reviewed: 2.1

User Interface/Features: 5
Stability: 4.7
Re-use value: 4.9
Overall: 5 stars!

PulpMotion Advanced is a sleek and modern slideshow/presentation making tool for the Mac from Aquafadas (they also make other great apps like Bannerzest, SnapFlow, and iDive). Their app PulpMotion Adv. sports a slick user interface, and has a handful of useful & innovative features.  The themes are really professional, and you can make a  spectacular slideshow in minutes!

PulpMotion’s user interface was superb. It reminds me of iMovie a lot, which is good since you can figure out how to use the app in seconds.  You can simply drag and drop your media, be it pictures, music, or videos, from the elegant Media Manager, the Finder or the Internet. This makes adding media really fast & efficient, and PulpMotion Advance does it right unlike others (yes, we are looking at you Microsoft).  Also, the Advance version boasts some really marvelous features compared to the standard version.  I will get into the specifics of those next.   These are just some of  the highlights with the app, and is the reason why I gave it a 5 star UI/features rating.

Now since I am reviewing PulpMotion Advance, I have to tell you some of the benefits of the adv. version over the standard one. In the advance version, you can finally create regions of interests in your pictures.  It also has inbuilt support for Lightroom and Aperture, which I love since I use Aperture frequently.  One feature that I wish that I came with the standard version as well is the ability to add audio comments, layer multiple soundtracks, and sync your image and music together better than before.  Also the Advance version has 100 themes baked in, but there are a still some really cool themes from the standard version that unfortunately weren’t included in the advance version.

Regardless, PulpMotion Advance still has the best built-in themes I’ve seen in an app of its class.  The app comes with children’s themes, futuristic/sci-fi themes, newspaper themes, and more! Each theme makes your photos look hundreds of times better, and more enjoyable, especially when showing your slideshow to a crowd or audience. PulpMotion Adv. other features features include effects, timing, audio manager, and great export features. You can export your photo show in a ton of formats, like iPhone, Quicktime, Apple TV, iMovie, just as a screensaver, and more. You also get advanced options as you export like the length of your show, audio options, and advanced options for the pros. Later on, you can also switch the formats for Youtube, MP4, and more.

The stability in PulpMotion is almost perfect, but not quite. Apart from occasional freezes, especially when adding GarageBand Music as audio, the program’s stability is fine. The export time is pretty reasonable, and the app opens up pretty quick. This is what brought me to give it a 4.5 star rating. My personal experience with the app was amazing. My first project included some pictures a family friend took at a garden, which I might post in the next couple of weeks.

Overall, PulpMotion is one of the best Mac apps. It’s elegant user interface, features, and approach to making slideshows makes it one of a kind. PulpMotion advanced is so good, that it should be apart of the next version of iLife.

  6. This I believe by just reading the review, seems to be a wonderful application. I believe this would work much better than Microsoft windows movie maker because it uses some of the basic features but even better! I also love how this cuts a lot of you work time in half, just by having the needed media right there in the palm of your hand. If it is just creating a slide show, this seems to be a quick easy to learn application to use! I believe this is a great review of pulp motion.

  7. Nice, thanks for the review.
