Plug yourself in with the cutest USB’s yet from MIMOBOP! Mimoco is a company based in Boston that has been making character influenced “designer” USB drives that range from 2GB to 16GB in size. My MIMOBOP came in a compact, with a contemporary design featuring the colors black, blue, and various shapes, make it look sleek. The drive is functional, good looking, and durable. As far as designer USB drives go, MIMOBOP Phantom X does it well.

I plugged the device into my 3-slot USB ports on the side, two of which were already in use for my mouse and card reader. I was having trouble fitting the MIMOBOP into the port, when I realized that it was too wide, it was extremely inconvenient. This means that, even if you have an extra USB slot device-thinggy-ma-bobber, this USB would still take up at least two of the slots due to its wide body. Although, the connection to my computer went quick and smoothly, and I was able to access the default files that were provided by Mimoco (which would be the avatars, icons, and various sized wallpapers.)  The feet of the USB light up in a deep red to let you know it is plugged in securely and correctly, which is extremely helpful (and adds to the aesthetic) . In comparison,  my WB external hard drive had only flashed a puny white light (which led to forgetting to safely remove it, which led to crashing and me losing 17,000 files; but that’s a different story!)

On the Mimoco website, there are over 50 designs to choose from, just for USBs! Most of the characters are Japanese inspired, such as Hello Kitty, Domo-kun, tokidoki, FriendsWithYou, and David Horvath. There are also many other designs, including Halo, Happy Tree Friends, and Star Wars. There are a wide variety of community designers or simply originals by Mimoco themselves! It was so overwhelming to choose which design I wanted to review, because they were all too amazing! Which did I decide on? Drum roll, please! I chose Mr. Phantom X by FriendsWithYou because the design was way too adorable to resist, and I liked the simplicity of it.

At first, I was a bit upset that my sweet Mr. Phantom did not come with a key ring or string to carry with me, but this is because Mimoco sells them separately as an accessory, labeled as the protoHoodie Keychain! These sweet hoodies zip snugly into the spacesuit-esque item, and have a clear vinyl cover to preserve the art, and comes with a thin clip for on the go purposes! These protoHoodies come in 7 different colors with unique patterns and little ears!

The Bottom Line

I recommend these to students of any age, particularly in middle school or higher, because they are cute and reliable ways to transfer homework and files between home and school. I can’t wait to show off my MIMOBOP!
