You can stay more than cool with the right laptop stand. You will also retain a good posture, and have less strain on your neck. That’s why today, I am going to tell you about an awesome product from Rain Design called iLap.

First of, the look of the product is amazing. Product design is very important to me and the iLap doesn’t disappoint. The iLap is constructed out of aluminum which has been sandblasted to a matt sheen. In fact, the aluminum construction has excellent heat dissipation, which is supposedly 13 x more effective than stainless steel! Rain Design even went ahead and stepped it up and notch and smoothened every corner, making the product very elegant with no hard corners or rough edges.

The iLap also comes with four thick silicon pads which elevate your MacBook (or any other laptop for that matter) 5mm above the aluminum. This is completely intentional to allow air to circulate underneath, which will help you make your laptop cooler. The plastic MacBook does have excessive heat problems, so if you are a victim to that, the iLap will remedy that problem instantly. The silicon pads are really grippy. Even while holding the iLap at an 45 degree angle, the computer on top doesn’t bulge.

The iLap also has been ergonomically designed. Since the iLap is slanted, the screen is elevated to a higher position than the keyboard, which reduces stress on your neck and shoulders. While using the iLap on your lap positions your laptop screen to you at a very comfortable angle to type. When using it for your lap use it comes with an extra cylinder shaped cushion that attaches to the bent curve on the very front of the product. The cushions make the iLap very comfortable for well, your lap! The front cushion provides support for your wrists and the other underneath rests directly across your knees. By the way, the cushion furthest away from you can move, so you can adjust it to be comfortable. While the iLap isn’t too portable, it can fit in my Speck Aftpack even though it could not fit into several laptop bags of smaller size. Therefore, this product is probably more suited for the home user who uses a laptop as their main machine.

My only suggestion is that the finishing of the cushions looks a bit dated in my opinion. Currently, the cushion that comes with the iLap is made out of black velvet and silver lining. I think it would be a good idea for Rain Design to hire a textile designer and have them introduce new colors and patterns that people can choose. The cushions are very plush and luxurious. But the iLap itself is super trendy and doesn’t look out place sitting next to a MacBook or MacBook Pro, but for a product that looks so high end with thick aluminum that has been sandblasted, the cushion cheapens the product ever so slightly.

The front cushion of course can be removed making it ideal to use on a desk. So if you want to use the iLap like a Griffin Elevator Stand, you can! When used on a desk the iLap’s ergonomic design tilts your keyboard reducing stress on your wrist and hands. Also since the display is elevated, you can look straight at the display without having to bend your neck.
I think a good way to judge if a product was worth purchasing by seeing if you use it on your day to day basis. I got my iLap few weeks back, and I can truly say that I have actually used it every day since. In fact, I don’t even use my MacBook Pro without the iLap. So if you own a laptop (Mac or PC), this is a must tool, that will make using your laptop a much more enjoyable experience.
